Learning Python in Nepal: What the Job Market Actually Pays
Nepal's IT exports crossed $1 billion in 2025 and the sector employs around 100,000 people, 90 percent of them in Kathmandu. Here is what Python developers are actually paid at each experience level, which skills employers list alongside the language, and the honest limits of a short course.
Programming courses in Kathmandu are usually advertised with a salary figure and very little else. This article gives the numbers, but also the parts that get left out — what employers ask for besides the language, and what a short course realistically does and does not achieve. THE SECTOR, IN FIGURES Nepal's IT service exports reached an estimated $1 billion in 2025, up from roughly $515 million in 2022 — about 20 percent annual growth over three years. Employment has grown alongside it. The sector now supports around 100,000 people, up from more than 70,000 in 2022. One industry projection suggests 500,000 by 2035 if growth holds at 18 percent a year. Two details are worth pausing on. Ninety percent of IT employment is in Kathmandu. This is a concentrated market, not a national one. For students in the valley that is an advantage; for those outside it, remote work is the realistic route rather than local employment. The work is largely export services, not domestic products. Earnings come from software development, IT outsourcing, AI services, healthcare data analytics for US firms, and home loan data processing for Australian companies — more than a dozen companies employ thousands of people in that last category alone. You are more likely to be building for a foreign client than for a Nepali consumer. One honest caveat about all these numbers: payments frequently arrive labelled as remittance, which makes IT earnings hard to separate from personal transfers in official banking data. These are credible industry estimates, not audited central bank figures. WHAT PYTHON DEVELOPERS ARE PAID • Entry / junior (0 to 2 years) — NPR 30,000 to 60,000 per month • Mid-level (2 to 5 years) — NPR 60,000 to 80,000 • Senior (5+ years) — NPR 80,000 to 120,000+ • Specialised (AI, machine learning, fintech) — up to NPR 300,000+ The shape of that list matters more than any single line. The gap between entry and mid-level is roughly a doubling, and it is closed by two to three years of actual project work — not by another certificate. The largest jump, into specialised AI and fintech roles, sits well beyond what any entry-level course delivers. Anyone quoting you the NPR 300,000 figure while selling a beginner course is describing a destination, not the next step. WHAT EMPLOYERS ASK FOR BESIDES PYTHON Job listings rarely stop at the language. The recurring requirements are: • A web framework — Django, Flask or FastAPI. Django dominates for full applications. • Databases — PostgreSQL, MySQL or MongoDB. Not theory: writing queries and designing tables. • APIs — building and consuming them • Git and GitHub — version control is assumed, not taught on the job • Testing — PyTest or equivalent • Some frontend — HTML, CSS, JavaScript, enough to work across the stack • Deployment basics — Docker, CI/CD, general DevOps awareness This is the honest gap in most beginner courses. A student finishes knowing Python syntax and cannot yet build, store, test or deploy anything. Syntax is perhaps a fifth of what the listing asks for. Which is why Python and Django belong together. Python alone teaches a language. Python with Django and a database teaches you to build something a person can use — which is the thing an employer is actually buying. WHO HIRES • Software companies and IT service exporters • Startups • Banking and fintech • AI and data science firms Banking and fintech are worth noting for anyone with a management or accounting background. That combination — domain knowledge plus Python — is often more employable than programming skill alone, because the difficult part of a fintech problem is usually the finance, not the syntax. WHAT A COURSE CAN AND CANNOT DO Being straightforward about this matters more than the marketing usually allows. A course can give you the language properly, teach a framework, get you building real applications with a database behind them, and leave you with work you can show. That is a genuine starting position. A course cannot give you the two to three years of project experience that separates a 35,000 salary from a 70,000 one. Nobody's course does. Anyone claiming otherwise is selling. What shortens that gap is what you build afterwards. A student with three finished projects on GitHub and a deployed application is in a different conversation from one holding only a certificate — even where the course was identical. PRACTICAL ADVICE Learn Python and Django together, not Python alone. The framework is where a language becomes employable. Use Git from your first week. It is on every listing and takes days to learn — but only if you start early enough for it to become habit. Build three things nobody assigned you. Coursework proves attendance; unassigned projects prove capability. If you have a non-technical background, do not discard it. Accounting plus Python, or English plus Python, is a narrower and less crowded position than Python alone. Judge courses on what they leave you with. Not the certificate — the working application.
