CMAT, BCA and KUUMAT Compared: Why the Same Exam Strategy Fails

CMAT and the TU BCA entrance have no negative marking, so leaving a question blank is a wasted mark. KUUMAT deducts 0.25 for every wrong answer, so the same habit costs you. A side-by-side breakdown of structure, marks, eligibility and what each exam actually rewards.
Students in Kathmandu routinely sit more than one entrance exam. It is common to prepare for CMAT and KUUMAT together, or CMAT alongside the TU BCA entrance, and to treat them as broadly the same test with different names.
They are not. One difference in particular can cost a student marks they were never going to get back.
THE DIFFERENCE THAT MATTERS MOST
CMAT and the TU BCA entrance carry no negative marking. KUUMAT deducts 0.25 marks for every wrong answer.
The consequences run in opposite directions.
In CMAT and BCA, a blank answer is a guaranteed zero while a guess costs nothing. Leaving questions unanswered is simply throwing away expected marks. You should finish the paper, guessing where you must.
In KUUMAT, four wrong guesses erase one correct answer. Blind guessing across a dozen uncertain questions actively lowers your score. Here the correct habit is to answer where you can eliminate at least one or two options, and leave the ones you genuinely cannot narrow.
A student who drills one strategy and applies it to both exams loses marks in whichever exam it does not suit. This is worth internalising early, because exam-hall habits are hard to switch at short notice.
SIDE BY SIDE
CMAT (Tribhuvan University)
• Leads to BBA, BIM, BHM, BTTM, BPA, BMS
• 100 marks, 100 questions (25 per section)
• 90 minutes
• No negative marking
• Pass mark 40
• Eligibility: D+ in each subject, CGPA 1.6 or above
BCA Entrance (Tribhuvan University)
• Leads to BCA
• 100 marks, 100 questions, 1 mark each
• 120 minutes
• No negative marking
• Pass mark 35
• Eligibility: D in each subject, CGPA 1.8 or above
KUUMAT (Kathmandu University)
• Leads to KU management programmes
• 100 marks, multiple choice
• Approximately 1 hour 55 minutes
• Negative marking: 0.25 deducted per wrong answer
• Requires 50th percentile across three stages
• Eligibility: GPA 2.0 or 50 percent
WHAT EACH EXAM ACTUALLY TESTS
CMAT: four equal quarters
CMAT splits evenly into four sections of 25 marks each — Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability, Logical Reasoning, and General Awareness.
The even weighting has a strategic implication people miss. Because no section is worth more than another, your weakest section is the cheapest place to gain marks. A student at 20 out of 25 in Quantitative and 8 out of 25 in General Awareness gains far more from a month on General Awareness than from pushing Quantitative to 23.
The pass mark is 40 out of 100, but passing is not the target. Recent trends put a competitive score around 70. Treat 40 as the floor for eligibility, not the goal.
Note also the 90-minute limit against 100 questions — roughly 54 seconds per question. CMAT is as much a pacing exam as a knowledge one.
BCA: half the paper is mathematics
The TU BCA entrance is weighted very differently:
• Mathematics — 50 questions, 50 marks
• English Grammar — 40 questions, 40 marks
• General Knowledge and IT — 10 questions, 10 marks
Half the paper is mathematics and 90 percent is maths plus grammar. General knowledge is worth 10 marks and is where students often spend disproportionate preparation time because it feels easier to study.
With 120 minutes for 100 questions, BCA gives you more time per question than CMAT does. The pass mark is 35.
A student weak in mathematics should be honest that BCA is a mathematics exam with an English section attached.
KUUMAT: the exam is only the first stage
KUUMAT differs structurally in a way that catches people out. It is not a single test. Admission requires clearing three stages — the written entrance, an analytical writing test, and an interview — each at a minimum 50th percentile.
Being strong at MCQs is not sufficient. A student who has never written a timed analytical essay, or never rehearsed an interview, can pass the entrance and still not be admitted.
The written paper covers the same four areas as CMAT — verbal, quantitative, logical reasoning, general awareness — but with the negative marking rule applied.
ELIGIBILITY THRESHOLDS DIFFER, AND THEY MATTER
The three exams do not share a floor:
• CMAT — D+ in every subject in grades 11 and 12, with CGPA 1.6 or above
• BCA — D in every subject, with CGPA 1.8 or above
• KUUMAT — GPA 2.0 or 50 percent
Note that CMAT requires a higher grade per subject (D+ rather than D) but a lower overall CGPA than BCA. A student can be eligible for one and not the other. Check your own marksheet against each threshold rather than assuming a single standard.
Students awaiting grade 12 results can generally apply provisionally, submitting certificates at admission.
A NOTE ON BIT
BIT is a separate entrance in the IT stream and its structure is set by the awarding institution rather than shared with the TU BCA paper. If you are preparing for BIT, take the exam structure from that year's official notice rather than assuming it mirrors BCA.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR MORE THAN ONE
Map the overlap first. CMAT and KUUMAT share all four subject areas. Content preparation genuinely transfers between them; only the marking strategy does not.
Practise CMAT and BCA under time pressure specifically. Their per-question budgets differ enough that pacing is a separate skill from content.
If KUUMAT is on your list, prepare the writing and interview from the start, not after results. Those stages carry equal weight and receive a fraction of most students' attention.
Spend your revision on your weakest section, not your strongest. In an evenly weighted exam like CMAT, that is simply where the marks are cheapest.
